Before a single Saturday kickoff alters the national picture, Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports audited the sidelines across the country to spotlight the head coaches entering the 2026 season under maximum heat.

From blue-blood commanders needing postseason breakthroughs to big-name hires struggling to launch, here are the ten college football head coaches facing the most scorching hot seats this autumn.
10. Jeff Lebby
Mississippi State | SEC

Starkville understands the reality of competing in the SEC, but going near-winless in conference play while rival Ole Miss thrives down the road creates an immediate pressure cooker. Jeff Lebby's fast-paced offense has to start producing actual conference wins before the seat in Starkville becomes red-hot.

"Jeff Lebby is the SEC coach under the most pressure to deliver in 2026."
9. Lincoln Riley
USC | Big Ten

High-octane scoring drives and draft-pick quarterbacks are great, but Southern California expects national championship contention. Hovering around eight or nine wins while adapting to the physical Big Ten grind simply doesn't cut it in Los Angeles, leaving Lincoln Riley under immense pressure to deliver a playoff-caliber breakthrough.

"All bets are off if the Trojans don’t make the leap from eight or nine wins and remain in the playoff mix until the final weekend of the regular season. In fact, Riley might need to land a playoff berth to ensure that he sticks around beyond this year."
8. Scott Satterfield
Cincinnati | Big 12

Scott Satterfield teased Bearcat nation with a seven-game win streak before an agonizing five-game slide to end the year extinguished all momentum. Cincinnati wants to be recognized as a legitimate player in the Big 12, and dropping crucial games down the stretch in November is the fastest way to lose the home crowd.

"At a minimum, Satterfield needs another six- or seven-win season to return in 2027."
7. Derek Mason
Middle Tennessee | Conference USA

Middle Tennessee handed Derek Mason the keys, expecting his SEC background to turn the Blue Raiders into an immediate force in Conference USA. Instead, back-to-back eight-loss seasons have left the program stuck in neutral, placing Mason right at the top or bottom of the smaller conference rankings.

"He easily tops the list among Group of Six coaches on the hot seat."
6. Bill O’Brien
Boston College | ACC

After a promising launch in Chestnut Hill, the wheels completely fell off for Bill O'Brien's Eagles during a miserable two-win campaign. Having a proven NFL resume looks great on paper, but if Boston College cannot stay competitive in the middle tier of the ACC, the program risks sliding completely out of the postseason picture.

Dave Aranda has navigated the hot seat before with a clutch bounce-back season in Waco, but his margin for error at Baylor is officially gone. In a chaotic, wide-open Big 12 where any program can make a run, another late-season fade will leave the administration with no choice but to hit reset.

"Baylor has the potential to be a major player in the NIL space and is running low on patience heading into Aranda’s seventh season."
4. Mike Locksley
Maryland | Big Ten

Mike Locksley deserves immense credit for keeping local DMV recruiting pipelines locked down, but recruiting victories only buy so much time in a brutal Big Ten environment. Coming off consecutive 4-8 finishes, the Terps must turn raw, young potential into actual bowl eligibility before local optimism evaporates completely.

"Locksley has made Maryland into a major player for local talent and has shown a knack for quarterback development but badly needs to get the Terrapins back to at least six wins after back-to-back 4-8 finishes."
3. Bill Belichick
North Carolina | ACC

Six Super Bowl rings command absolute respect in an NFL locker room, but college football's portal era is a completely different beast. Bill Belichick's grand experiment in Chapel Hill has generated endless media headlines off the field while delivering very little joy on it, proving that professional pedigree doesn't automatically translate into Saturday dominance without roster stability.

"There’s been virtually nothing in the way of good news since Belichick was hired. The Tar Heels were barely competitive in Belichick’s four-win 2025 season, and after performing another roster overhaul this winter will need to put everything together to be an ACC factor."
2. Luke Fickell
Wisconsin | Big Ten

The traditional "Jump Around" energy in Madison hits a whole lot differently when the scoreboard isn't cooperating. With a demanding schedule on tap, Fickell's modernizing project needs tangible wins fast.

"He’ll have one more year to get Wisconsin back on track but will be hard-pressed to do more than six or so wins given the state of his roster and the quality of the Big Ten."
1. Mike Norvell
Florida State | ACC

Tallahassee is running dangerously low on patience after watching a fairytale 2023 campaign dissolve into consecutive years of frustration. Booster checks and massive buyouts aside, the Seminoles look like a program searching for an identity, and unless Mike Norvell orchestrates an immediate U-turn in the ACC standings, no contract buyout will be large enough to insulate him from the inevitable.

"More so than any other major-conference coach, Norvell needs to show significant progress this season to ensure at least another year in charge. If fired after this season, he’d be due about $51 million. If things don’t improve, we’ll find out whether FSU is willing to spend that amount to kickstart a new era for the program."
