2025 Frozen Four: The First-Round and Quarterfinals

The First-Round

Upsets have come early and often in this year’s NCAA Hockey Championships. The second-ranked Michigan State Spartans and third-ranked Maine Black Bears were stunned in the opening round. The Cornell Big Red stunned the Spartans, with the Penn State Nittany Lions upsetting Maine. But arguably, the biggest upset was the 16-16-4 UMass Minutemen upending the 25-10-4 Minnesota Golden Gophers in overtime.

The other five teams advancing to the quarterfinals were the Denver Pioneers, UConn Huskies, Western Michigan Broncos, Boston University Terriers, and top-seeded Boston College Eagles.

The Quarterfinals

The upsets continued into the next round. Boston College was sent packing by the Pioneers, dropping a 3-1 decision. Likewise, Penn State defeated the Huskies 3-2. Nothing came easy in the other two contests. Boston University needed overtime to escape its matchup versus Cornell. Western Michigan erased a 1-0 deficit, scoring a power-play goal in the third period to knock off the Minutemen.

2025 Frozen Four: The Semifinals

Denver Pioneers vs. Western Michigan Broncos

  • Arena: Enterprise Center
  • Location: St. Louis, MO
  • Where to Watch: ESPN2/ESPN+
  • Time: 5:00 p.m. ET
  • Moneyline: DEN -145 | WMI +115
  • Total: 5.5

The Western Michigan Broncos are the highest-ranked team left standing. Ranked fourth ahead of the NCAA Championship, the Broncos must get past the Denver Pioneers in the first semifinal matchup.

So far in the tournament, goaltending has been the difference for Denver. Matt Davis has allowed two goals on 65 shots for a sterling .969 save percentage. However, the Pioneers also get a lot out of their offense. Led by Zeev Buium, Denver’s eight goals in the tournament have come from seven players.

Western Michigan may be the higher seed, but the Broncos are the betting underdog. Denver is a well-oiled machine with few holes in its roster. We’re betting on the Pioneers in this one.

Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Boston University Terriers

  • Arena: Enterprise Center
  • Location: St. Louis, MO
  • Where to Watch: ESPN2/ESPN+
  • Time: 8:30 p.m. ET
  • Moneyline: BU -170 | PEN +140
  • Total: 6.5

The Nittany Lions and Terriers semifinal showdown could be one of the most electric contests in recent memory. Both teams can turn their offenses loose, meaning this one could turn into a track meet.

Quinn Hutson propelled Boston University to the Frozen Four with his overtime marker in the quarterfinals. He was one of five Terriers to record four or more shots, building off their eight-goal outburst in the first round. Similarly, Penn State has recorded eight goals on 67 shots through the opening two rounds.

Penn State netminder Arsenii Sergeev has been up to the task, but the Terriers’ offense will prove too much. Boston University is the deserving favorite and won’t mess this up.

2025 Frozen Four: Betting on the Champion

If you’re following along, that means we have the Denver Pioneers facing off against the Boston University Terriers in this year’s championship. According to the futures board, Denver is the odds-on favorite to win, but we can’t overlook the value on the Terriers.

Boston University has resilient wins in each of the first two rounds, looking like the team of destiny each step of the way. They can continue their unexpected run with another upset victory over Denver in the National Championship Game.

2025 Frozen Four: Final Thoughts

The 2025 Frozen Four is one of the most equally matched tournaments in recent memory. All four teams are priced within +200 to +400 on the futures board, exemplifying the level playing field. We like the two favorites in the semifinals, with Terriers cashing as moderate +260 underdogs in the championship. But as we’ve seen in this tournament, anything can happen.
