Guardians Deal Civale To Rays for Prospect Manzardo

The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians completed a big trade on Monday, with Cleveland sending starting pitcher Aaron Civale to the Rays for prospect Kyle Manzardo.
What’s confusing many is why the Guardians would opt to trade one of their key pitchers at this point of the season. Moreover, news about first baseman Josh Bell also being potentially on the move adds to this feeling.
Even though the Rays are typically known for their pitching, they’ve been in search of adding to their rotation ahead of the MLB trade deadline, and they did that here with Civale.
The Rays’ pitching staff has been beleaguered by injuries this season, including a big blow to Jeffrey Springs. Despite a stellar start, with performances that had tipped him to be in the AL Cy Young race, Springs suffered a significant injury early in the season.
With this acquisition, Tampa Bay adds a reliable, young, and talented pitcher to their ranks, which could well turn out to be a wise move in their quest for a World Series.
Cleveland has also been known as a strong pitching market, and it’s no secret that they’ve been looking to add players who can hit to the fold, which Manzardo can.
Even with Cleveland dealing Civale, this type of move shouldn’t take them out of the running for a lackluster AL Central, where it appears to be a two-horse race between them and the Minnesota Twins.
