Will Shohei Ohtani Sign Before February? Impact on MLB Offseason

How fitting would it be to witness baseball's best player on the game's most iconic franchise? Ohtani won't pitch till 2025 following right elbow surgery but his bat would be welcomed on a Yankees squad that hit .227 last season - 29th in MLB. Whether the New York brass are willing to engage in a bidding war remains to be seen.

Following two straight down seasons, Bellinger enjoyed a career renaissance in the Windy City in 2023, hitting .307 with 26 home runs and a .881 OPS. New York is in desperate need of a left-handed power bat as well as a capable outfielder. The former NL MVP checks both boxes.

Outside of Gerrit Cole, New York's starting pitching left much to be desired. The Yankees landed Masahiro Tanaka in 2014 and will be looking to do the same with fellow Japanese hurler Yoshinobu Yamamoto. One of the most hyped international prospects in recent memory, Yamamoto pitched to a 1.16 ERA in 171 innings in 2023, his third straight season with an ERA under 2.00.

Anyone who follows the Bronx Bombers knows the club must receive greater offensive production from the hot corner. While Matt Chapman will surely be in the mix, New York should settle for the more consistent bat of Candelario, who launched a career-high 22 home runs last season.

An elite contact hitter, South Korea's Jung Hoo Lee would be an ideal fit atop the Yankees lineup, setting the stage for sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Lee would also be a welcomed addition in the outfield, with five KBO gold gloves to his name.
