Braves vs. Mets: Series History, All-Time Records, Wins

Hannah Brewitt

Host · Writer

The storied rivalry between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets stretches back decades.

Here’s a look at the series’ history, all-time records, wins, and more:

Braves vs. Mets Series History

The Braves and Mets have met 922 times, with the Braves controlling the series 504-417-1. In 2022, both teams were top competitors in the National League, reigniting the contention between the divisional rivals.

Many believe the rivalry dates back to the late 1960s with Tom Seaver. Seaver is widely remembered as one of the greatest pitchers of all time and one of the best to ever wear a Mets uniform. But, his big league career technically began with the Braves.

The Braves selected Seaver in the secondary phase of the January draft, with the last pick in the first round. But because the future Hall of Famer was still a University of Southern California student, he was deemed ineligible to sign. He had technically signed the contract, so the NCAA ruled that Seaver was not eligible to play in college either. Thus, the commissioner’s office set up a special lottery for Seaver, which landed him in New York. For the Braves, Seaver became “the one that got away."

Three years later, the league expanded, and the two teams met in the first NLCS. The Mets swept the Braves in that series, and guess who was the winning pitcher in Game 1? Tom Seaver.

Fast forward to 1994. The Braves and Mets were placed in the same division through realignment, rekindling the rivalry that started with the struggle over Seaver.

Cruising into August, the Braves are dominating the Mets in the battle for National League East supremacy. The Mets are a whopping 19.5 games behind the Braves and have basically thrown in the towel on the 2023 season.

Throughout this season, the “rivalry" has been entirely one-sided. About a year ago, fans watched these two evenly-matched teams duke it out for the divisional title in the final days of the regular season. Today, the circumstances look incredibly different. The Braves are the best team in Major League Baseball. Meanwhile, the Mets are a shell of the squad that racked up 101 wins in 2022.

The Braves boast a 69-37 record on the other side of the trade deadline. On Wednesday, the club defeated the Angels 12-5, completing a solid 5-1 homestand at Truist Park. The Braves hit seven homers across the three-game series against the Angels, again displaying this club’s impressive offensive prowess. They’re on pace to smash a Major League record 315 home runs, a highly attainable goal with a lineup of Ronald Acuna, Austin Riley, and Matt Olson.

At 50-57, the Mets have chalked this season up to a loss. The club took full advantage of the trade deadline, offloading six players (including two future Hall of Famers) to receive eight quality prospects to replenish the farm system. The Mets began the spree Thursday by sending closer David Robertson to the Marlins. Less than a day later, they traded three-time AL Cy Young winner Max Scherzer to the Rangers. On Tuesday, they shipped off Justin Verlander to his former club, the Astros. While the Mets are still responsible for about $70 million in payouts between Scherzer and Verlander, the flurry of trades frees up a considerable amount of cash that can be used to build the club for the future.

The Braves host the Cubs for a three-game series this weekend before traveling north to face the Pirates. The Mets will take on the Orioles on the road, then take their turn against the Cubs at Citi Field.
