Are the Tigers the most talented team? Probably not. But nobody’s been better through two months. Tarik Skubal is the best pitcher in baseball right now, and the lineup is deeper thanks to Gleyber Torres. Spencer Torkelson and Javier Baez have rebounded in significant ways.

Detroit leads the league in run differential (+91) and ERA (3.20), and while it may not last all year, they deserve the top spot in our Power Rankings, at least for now. The Yankees might be the AL favorites in October, but in early June, Detroit stands alone.

10. Houston Astros: Buy or Sell?!
May Record: 15-13 (Prev. Ranking: 12)

The Astros posted a solid 15-13 mark in May, climbing back toward .500 and raising legitimate questions about what direction they’ll choose come July. Hunter Brown has quietly emerged as a Cy Young contender, while Isaac Paredes has started turning Minute Maid Park’s Crawford Boxes into his personal launching pad. Cam Smith, meanwhile, has impressed defensively as he continues adapting to right field in his rookie season.

With veterans like Framber Valdez and Bryan Abreu approaching free agency, Houston could dangle arms at the trade deadline. 9. Seattle Mariners: Where’s the Elite Pitching?

The Mariners' formula was simple: elite pitching and just enough offense for years. But so far in 2025, it’s been the opposite. Seattle’s offense is holding its own, ranking 13th in runs scored and top-five in park-adjusted wRC+ (111). Cal Raleigh has been the breakout star, tied with Shohei Ohtani for the MLB lead in home runs.

On the other hand, the pitching hasn’t lived up to its billing. The team ERA sits at 3.86 through 58 games, good for just 15th in the league. If the arms return to form and the offense keeps mashing, Seattle could separate itself in the AL West.

8. San Diego Padres: Best is Still to Come?
May Record: 13-13 (Prev. Ranking: 8)

San Diego treaded water in May, finishing 13-13 and leaving their outlook mostly unchanged. The Padres still boast enough star power to make noise in October, especially if they fortify the roster at the deadline.

They’re firmly in the Wild Card mix, assuming the Dodgers hold on atop the division. But don’t count out a hot Padres stretch that puts pressure on L.A. The talent is there; consistency is the next step.
7. San Francisco Giants: Arms Built to Last?

The Giants mirror the Padres in more ways than one — same May record, similar questions. But the difference is on the mound: San Francisco owns the second-best team ERA in baseball, sitting at 3.04.

Their pitching should keep them in the race. The question is whether the offense heats up enough to complement it. The battle for second in the NL West between the Giants and Padres could last all season, with both teams hovering near playoff position.
6. Los Angeles Dodgers: Pitching Problems Looming Large

The Dodgers' biggest offseason priority was pitching depth, yet injuries and inconsistency have created a middle-of-the-pack staff. That’s why L.A. slips in our rankings despite a winning May.

Offensively, there’s no concern. Shohei Ohtani continues to be elite, and reinforcements are on the way: Ohtani could return to the mound, while Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Michael Kopech offer upside. But until the arms stabilize, the Dodgers will look a little more vulnerable than expected.

The Cubs are beginning to pull away in the NL Central race, thanks to a loaded lineup and a rotation that ranks third in ERA (3.13). Pete Crow-Armstrong has blossomed into an MVP candidate, Kyle Tucker is right there with him, and Seiya Suzuki, Carson Kelly, Dansby Swanson, and Michael Busch round out one of baseball’s most complete offenses.

After a dominant May, Chicago looks not just like a division favorite, but a contender for one of the NL’s top two seeds — and a postseason bye.
4. Philadelphia Phillies: Tripped at the Finish Line

The Phillies were set to take the No. 1 spot in these rankings — until the Brewers came to town. A sweep capped by a 17-7 drubbing (including 12 earned runs off Jesus Luzardo) dropped Philly slightly down the list.

Still, it was a sensational month. But with the Mets retaking first place in the division and owning a sweep over the Phillies in their only head-to-head so far, the slight edge in this tight NL East battle goes to New York. Their upcoming series in Philly will give us a more accurate gauge.
3. New York Mets: Still Haven’t Seen the Best of Juan Soto
May Record: 15-12 (Prev. Ranking: 1)

The Mets cool off a bit after their red-hot April, but they remain in the top three thanks to the best team ERA in baseball (2.91), an elite bullpen anchored by Edwin Diaz, and series wins over the Phillies, Dodgers, and Cubs.

Juan Soto has yet to ignite fully, which makes this team scary. If he gets rolling, New York could easily surge back to No. 1. They’ve handled their biggest competition to date, but need to stay sharp as the division tightens.
2. New York Yankees: MVP Leading the Way
May Record: 17-9 (Prev. Ranking: 4)

Aaron Judge is running away with the MVP, and the Yankees keep stacking wins. Trent Grisham has been a revelation, while Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt have helped ease the post-Soto transition with strong starts.

New York sits atop the AL East and looks like the American League’s top October threat, especially given the relative softness of their playoff path. The NL may boast more depth, but the Yankees are in pole position.
