Buy or Sell the LA Clippers to Win the 2024 NBA Championship?
You should sell the Clippers 2024 NBA Championship odds for now. There are still two months remaining in the regular season, and I can’t count on all of the Clippers’ core group of players staying healthy for the remainder of the season. Plus, there is a strong chance of their first-round matchup being against either the Phoenix Suns or Dallas Mavericks, two teams that can get hot at the right time and knock out the Clippers in round one.
Still, I am high on the Clippers, but I would rather wait until the regular season concludes to better understand the Clippers' playoff seeding and potential matchups while knowing the health status of the whole team. While I might sacrifice some value, or gain some, I find it much safer to go that route.
LA Clippers (36-17) Season Update
It looked like the Clippers were in deep trouble through November and the early days of the James Harden acquisition. Entering December, the Clippers sat at just 8-10, but since then, everything has turned around as they’ve gone 28-7. Harden’s role as the primary facilitator and third scorer figured itself out alongside Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, who provided the scoring punch. In terms of role players, no team has been deeper in that department, as guys like Russell Westbrook, Norman Powell, Terance Mann, and Ivica Zubac have all given valuable minutes. Currently holding the third seed in the Western Conference, the Clippers are just a half-game back of the Oklahoma City Thunder, who they face Thursday night, with two games remaining against the top-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Case For the Clippers As 2024 NBA Champions
If we look at the top of the Western Conference, the Clippers stack up against anyone. In a seven-game series, I’d trust their veteran presence to take out the Timberwolves and Thunder, while I’d give them a 50/50 chance versus the Denver Nuggets. Their main two leaders, Tyronn Lue and Kawhi Leonard, already have championships, alongside guys like Paul George and Russell Westbrook, who have plenty of playoff experience despite missing a championship. Their depth stands out against other teams, so if they can get elite performances from their top three guys, we can see them in the NBA Finals.
The Case Against the Clippers As 2024 NBA Champions
At their best, the Clippers are a championship contender. However, a lot needs to go right for them along the way. First and foremost, they have to get there healthy. Knock on wood that they’ve been fine so far, but we’ve seen too many strong seasons ruined by injuries to either Kawhi Leonard or Paul George in recent years. We’ve not seen a full sample size of them performing at their best since the bubble in 2020. For basketball’s sake, we hope they make it. Worrying about what version of James Harden they’ll get come playoff time is also a fair criticism. We’ve seen too many postseason collapses from him to expect him to be consistent when it matters most.
Plus, in terms of seeding, the Clippers have the seventh-hardest remaining schedule in basketball, while Oklahoma City, Denver, and Minnesota all have the top-ten easiest schedules. In my eyes, the Clippers look destined for the fourth seed, making them in line for a tough first-round matchup against either Dallas or Phoenix.
