5. Kentucky Wildcats
Recent developments have clarified that the Kentucky Wildcats are interested in Chaz Lanier. Mark Pope, the new head coach at UK, has been actively recruiting and trying to fill out a competitive roster from scratch. While the roster is nowhere near finished or as good as Kentucky fans would like, Pope has grabbed several solid players that should be good fits for his three-point-heavy style. At 6’4”, Lanier averaged nearly 20 points per game, shot 44% from three, and has emerged as a target for Pope. Lanier is in the NBA Draft and was recently at a G-League Elite Camp in Chicago. Kentucky will battle Tennessee and others for his commitment if Lanier returns to college.

1. Tennessee Volunteers
Sharpshooting guard Chaz Lanier is one of the top remaining uncommitted players in the transfer portal, and the former North Florida player has several good options he is considering. The most obvious pick would be the Tennessee Volunteers. Rick Barnes has utilized the portal recently to bolster his roster, including the addition of SEC Player of the Year Dalton Knecht. Playing with guards Zakai Zeigler and Jahmai Mashack would be a good fit. The biggest reason to consider Tennessee a significant threat to land him is that Lanier is from Tennessee and played high school basketball in the state. The Volunteers have already added Darlinstone Dubar from Hofstra and a good scorer from Charlotte. Lanier would give them another excellent perimeter shooter as they try to replace the departed Knecht.

2. Ole Miss Rebels
The Ole Miss Rebels immediately became a school to watch with Chaz Lanier when Chris Beard added Lanier’s former high school teammate, Malik Dia. Dia began his career at Vanderbilt and then blossomed at Belmont as a stretch four with a good shooting touch. Unsurprisingly, Beard is assembling a talented roster in Oxford, but they could use a boost in the backcourt to replace 2023’s second-leading scorer, guard Allen Flanigan. The prior relationship with Dia, plus an opportunity to play significant minutes in the SEC, could be a strong pull.

3. Florida State Seminoles
Last season was a miserable year for the Florida State Seminoles, and head coach Leonard Hamilton had to hit the reset button as several key players hit the transfer portal. That means there is a lot of opportunity for players to move to Tallahassee and play significant roles with lots of available minutes. Chaz Lanier has spent the past four years playing in Jacksonville, and if he wanted to move up a level but stay in Florida, a drive west to Florida State would allow him to be a big part of the offense for an ACC team.

4. Florida Gators
Todd Golden’s Florida Gators were a good story in 2023 as they surprised many by making the NCAA Tournament as a high-scoring offensive team. The Gators lost a few starters to the transfer portal and need to rework the backcourt to have a shot at a repeat performance in 2024. Golden is considered a rising star in the coaching profession, and his team plays a style that would fit a gifted perimeter shooter like Chaz Lanier. The Gators would best suit the former North Florida player if he wanted to stay in Florida.
