One of the greatest to ever play his position, Simpson starred at USC, capturing the 1968 Heisman Trophy en route to being selected first overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 1969 NFL Draft. In Buffalo, Simpson, known as “The Juice," became the first player in league history to rush for 2,000 yards, tallying 2,003 during the 1973 campaign while capturing MVP honors. A five-time First-team All-Pro selection, he finished his career with 11,236 rushing yards and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.
However, Simpson’s professional accomplishments were quickly overshadowed when he stood trial in 1994 for the double murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, ultimately being acquitted. He was later found liable in a civil trial.
Further legal troubles followed, and Simpson was eventually sentenced to 33 years in prison for a 2007 armed robbery. He was released in 2017 after serving almost nine years and discharged from parole in 2021.
