5 Things We Learned From the Pittsburgh Steelers After Week 3

Nick Herbig Leads Charge on Defense
It was another dominant showing by the defense in the Pittsburgh Steelers Week 3 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. After Alex Highsmith left the game with an injury, Nick Herbig took over, recording three tackles and a pair of sacks in the win. As special as T.J. Watt is on defense, the Steelers have multiple other weapons that can cause havoc for opposing offenses. Through three games, the Steelers' defense hasn't allowed more than ten points in a game. You can say what you want about the offenses they've faced, but that's damn impressive.Â

Justin Fields is Just Scratching the Surface
You can say what you want about Justin Fields, but he was at his best on Sunday in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Fields rushed for a touchdown and threw for 245 yards and a touchdown in the Steelers' 20-10 victory over the Chargers. Yes, he had an interception that was tipped, but Fields continues to play a mistake-free game as a Steeler, and that's a big reason why he's likely won the starting quarterback job, even when Russell Wilson returns from injury. Fields is doing everything asked of him under center for the Steelers, and if you haven't come away impressed, you likely need to check your glasses prescription.Â
Broderick Jones Bounces Back
If there was one player we were looking to bounce back after a rough showing in Week 2 against Denver, it was Broderick Jones. With rookie Troy Fautanu injured, Jones needed to find his game quickly. Jones lived up to his first-round draft status in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers. We've known that the potential has always been there, but finding consistency has been difficult. Let's see if he can string together a pair of solid appearances for the Steelers.Â

Calvin Austin III Shows Importance to Offense
With the way the Steelers wide receiver room lines up right now, there's no clear No. 2 behind George Pickens. On Sunday afternoon, Calvin Austin III highlighted his unique skillset in the offense, catching four passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. His speed is something that immediately stands out in a Steelers offense that's lacking playmakers. If Austin III can continue to demonstrate he needs more touches on offense, that's only a good sign for the Steelers as a unit.Â

Arthur Smith Continues Impressing as OC
Plenty of Pittsburgh Steelers fans entered the year with question marks about what Arthur Smith would do for this offense. It's been night and day through three weeks compared to what we witnessed last year under Matt Canada. Smith calls a composed game, and as we saw in Week 3 vs. the Chargers, one that attacks areas of weakness with the opposition. Even though the Steelers struggled to run the ball in the first half, they eventually broke through in the second, which coincided with some great throughs over the middle of the field by Fields. You'd have never seen something like that last year.Â
