In a strategic move in the 2024 NFL Draft, the New York Jets engaged in a modest trade with the Minnesota Vikings, with the Jets dropping from the 10th to the 11th overall pick, allowing the Vikings to secure quarterback JJ McCarthy to round out the top ten. In return, the Jets selected Olu Fashanu, an outstanding offensive lineman from Penn State, at the 11th position.
Fashanu‘s last season at Penn State was notably impressive, as he allowed only one quarterback pressure in more than 600 pass blocking snaps, playing a pivotal role in protecting his quarterback, Drew Allar. This statistic alone highlighted his reliability and efficiency in one of the most critical roles on the field. As Fashanu transitions to the professional stage, his primary task will be to provide similar protection for Aaron Rodgers, the veteran quarterback of the Jets, who is making a comeback from an Achilles injury sustained after only four plays last season.
The selection of Fashanu is considered both safe and astute by analysts. With Rodgers in the twilight of his career, protecting him is paramount. Fashanu not only excels in pass protection but has also demonstrated strong capabilities in run blocking. His performance at Penn State, where the offense averaged 4.6 yards per carry and 185 rushing yards per game, showcased his ability to dominate in the run game, making him a dual-threat on the line.
Fashanu‘s arrival in New York is expected to bolster a Jets offensive line that aims to reduce the pressure on Rodgers. His presence should also enhance the performance of Breece Hall and the Jets’ rushing attack, providing them with more options and flexibility in their offensive play calling.
The trade and subsequent draft pick by the Jets illustrate a well-calculated strategy aimed at strengthening their team immediately. By securing Fashanu, the Jets have addressed a crucial need to protect their most valuable asset in Rodgers and to pave the way for a more robust running game.
This draft decision by the Jets will likely be viewed favorably as they look to make a significant impact in the upcoming NFL season. The focus now shifts to how quickly Fashanu can adjust to the NFL’s pace and physicality, and how his presence can translate into success on the field for a team eager to compete at a higher level.
