AL East Odds Update: Orioles Steal Top Spot From Rays

After being tied with equal -110 odds to win the AL East last week, the Baltimore Orioles are now the odds-on favorite over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Baltimore Orioles -155 (Last week: -110)

The oddsmakers’ disrespect of the Baltimore Orioles was real to begin the regular season, but the O’s have forced that to change with the results they’ve continued to display. Despite two straight losses, Baltimore has won seven of their last ten games and remains two games clear of the Tampa Bay Rays for the top spot in the AL East. With the Orioles continuing to hold down the fort in the AL East, they’ve seen their odds of winning the division bet down from -110 to -155.

Tampa Bay Rays +165 (Last week: -110)

With one of the strongest starts to a regular season in recent memory, the Tampa Bay Rays were at one time a major favorite to win the AL East. Over the last month, though, those odds have trailed off with their poor play. The Rays have dealt with multiple injuries in their rotation, with Shane McClanahan being the latest. Their ace is unlikely to pitch again this season, which has led to their odds dropping from -110 to +165, despite only being two games behind the first-place Orioles.

SportsGrid’s Best Daily MLB Prop Picks

Toronto Blue Jays +800 (Last week: +1100)

The Toronto Blue Jays have high-end talent but have struggled with consistency. Toronto occupies a wild-card position in the American League but still struggles to produce runs consistently. They’ve been getting some of the best starting pitching in baseball, but their offense is far too inconsistent to be confident in them going on a late-season run to capture the AL East. Still, Toronto sits six games back of the O’s for the top spot, and they’ve seen their odds of winning the division bet down from +1100 to +800 over the last week.

New York Yankees +22000 (Last week: +6000)

The New York Yankees had many problems to start the year. Aaron Judge suffered an injury against the Los Angeles Dodgers and was out for a prolonged period, but he’s now back in the lineup for the Bronx Bombers. Even with Judge back in the fold, the Yankees haven’t been able to find any consistent success and are struggling to stay in the American League playoff race. The Yankees sit 5.5 games behind the last wild-card spot and are in the basement of the AL East, leading to their odds continuing to plummet to win the division from +6000 to +22000.

Boston Red Sox +25000 (Last week: +6000)

After a mediocre first three months of the regular season, the Boston Red Sox caught fire in July and were considered back in the playoff race. Not so fast. The Red Sox were swept last weekend by the Toronto Blue Jays and are now five games back of the final wild-card position in the American League. Boston is all but eliminated in the AL East race too, where they sit 11 games behind the Orioles. The Red Sox’s odds of winning the division have dropped from +6000 to +25000.
