Astros @ Athletics – First Pitch: 9:40 p.m.
We’re focusing our attention on an exciting matchup, the Houston Astros against the Oakland A’s. And, folks, we’ve got some intriguing narratives to explore here. This one might look like an easy road win for the Astros, but baseball’s never that simple, is it?
First, let’s discuss the man on the mound for the A’s: James Kaprielian. His recent form leaves much to be desired, so we’re not holding our breath for a shutdown performance from him tonight. After all, Oakland is a pitcher’s park, and facing the Astros lineup could be daunting for anyone.
However, Houston’s hitting prowess over the last 30 days leaves something to be desired. Against right-handed pitching, they’ve been somewhat lackluster. Consider these ISO Power numbers against right-handed pitching: Jose Altuve (.000), Alex Bregman (.111), Kyle Tucker (.085), Jose Abreu (.034), Jeremy Pena (.124), Jake Meyers (.127), and Martin Maldonado (.170). Not exactly the numbers that strike fear in the heart of opposing pitchers.
On the flip side, the Astros have Hunter Brown on the mound. His numbers are a sigh of relief for Astros fans: an impressive xFIP of 2.95 over the past 30 days, a K rate close to 30%, and decent splits between lefty and righty batters. Despite the Astros’ offensive struggles, Brown’s form might just be the X-factor that pushes them to a victory.
So, we’re placing our bets on Houston for this game. But wouldn’t it be more enticing if the Astros’ lineup could muster some strength for those RBIs and team totals? Alas, we may have to settle for a ‘just win’ scenario.
