Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Detroit Tigers Spread, Line, Odds, Predictions, Picks and Betting Preview

Pirates @ Tigers – First Pitch: 6:40 p.m.

Expected Forecast: Broken Clouds, 60°

The MLB showdown between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Detroit Tigers as they prepare to take the field with Luis Ortiz and Michael Lorenzen headlining the pitching matchups. With the Tigers slightly favored at -124, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, and a total of 9 runs expected, this could be an interesting game for bettors.

Lorenzen, pitching for the Tigers, has been solid this season and has extensive experience against the Pirates from his time with the Cincinnati Reds. The Pirates’ lineup might give him a challenge, but the Tigers’ bullpen has displayed impressive resilience. Surprisingly, both teams’ bullpens have shown reasonable efficiency in terms of team ERA.

Ortiz, the Pirates’ pitcher, might not be a high-strikeout player, but his effectiveness should not be underestimated. His high xFIP of 5.78 and struggles against left-handed batters might pose challenges, but the Tigers’ lineup isn’t especially strong against right-hand pitching, which could be Ortiz’s advantage.

A key player to watch out for in the Pirates’ lineup is Jack Suwinski, with an impressive elevated ISO power number of .386. However, the Pirates’ overall performance against right-hand pitching has been underwhelming in the past 30 days, with several players, such as Tucupita Marcano and Connor Joe, displaying relatively low ISO power numbers of .178 and .197, respectively.

The Tigers, while they can field several left-handed batters against Ortiz, are not performing well overall. Apart from Andy Ibáñez, with an ISO power number of .188, all other estimated players in the lineup are underperforming against right-handed pitching.

Given these conditions, betting on the under could be a more promising strategy for this game. If it takes 10 runs to lose this bet, then so be it, but the under seems to hold more potential value.
