1. Dusty Baker – Astros
Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker has been around the block, managing multiple teams throughout his career. Baker began with the San Francisco Giants in 1993 and has been the manager of five teams. Baker appears to have the Astros back on track, capturing three more victories and getting them in the conversation again for the AL West.
2. Bruce Bochy – Rangers
Bruce Bochy returned as a manager in 2023, now the bench boss for the Texas Rangers. His most famous tenure came with the Giants from 2007 to 2019, where he led them to three World Series victories. Bochy has led the Rangers to the top of the AL West, but they’ve been struggling lately, compiling just two more wins this last week.
3. Terry Francona – Guardians
Terry Francona was the Boston Red Sox’s longtime manager, helping break the curse in 2004 when the BoSox won their first World Series since 1918. Since 2013, Francona has managed the Cleveland Guardians. Francona and the Guardians have made their presence felt in the AL Central and are back on top heading into the All-Star break after compiling four more wins.
4. Buck Showalter – Mets
The 66-year-old Buck Showalter is managing his fifth team, the New York Mets. Previously, Showalter led the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles. Showalter’s tenure with the Mets hasn’t gone according to plan in 2023, but he did lead them to four more wins over the last week.
5. Bob Melvin – Padres
Bob Melvin helped lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a World Series victory in 2001. He is now with the San Diego Padres but managed three other teams throughout his career. Even though the Padres have a ton of talent on their roster, it’s primarily been a struggle this year. Melvin helped register four more wins for the club.
6. Bud Black – Rockies
Former National League Manager of the Year with the Padres, Bud Black, has found a new home with the Colorado Rockies. Black has two World Series titles (1985 and 2002) but finds himself with a rebuilding Rockies in 2023. It hasn’t been a good stretch for Black or the Rockies, adding just one victory, but he did manage to surpass the 1,100-win mark.
7. A.J. Hinch – Tigers
It was a controversial win, but A.J. Hinch captured the World Series with the 2017 Houston Astros. Many were unsure if he’d manage again, but he signed a deal with the Detroit Tigers in 2021. Hinch and the Tigers limped into the All-Star break, compiling just two more victories over the last week of action.
8. Dave Roberts – Dodgers
Dave Roberts has found great success managing the Los Angeles Dodgers. He won a World Series as a player with the Red Sox in 2004 before capturing his first as a manager in 2020 with the Dodgers. Roberts joined the 700-win plateau last week and added four more wins to his resume this week.
9. Kevin Cash – Rays
The Tampa Bay Rays are Kevin Cash’s first managerial job, where he has won back-to-back AL Manager of the Year awards (2020 and 2021). Cash has been a significant part of the Rays’ success this season, leading them to the second-best record in baseball. Tampa Bay is still a contender, but Cash only added one win over the last week, snapping a seven-game drought.
10. Craig Counsell – Brewers
Craig Counsell has managed nearly 1200 games in MLB, all of which have come with the Milwaukee Brewers. Counsell won two World Series titles (1997 and 2001) as a player but is still looking for his first as a manager. Counsell and the Brewers are right there in the NL Central and finished the first half on a high note, adding three more wins.
