5 Best Bets for College Basketball Wednesday: Picks for the Road

Virginia (-1.5) @ Boston College
This is simply a spot where Virginia cannot afford to lose. After dropping three of their past four games, the Cavaliers have inched closer to the bubble and now sit a bad loss away from potentially being on the wrong side of it. The bright side is that Virginia's style of play travels well, and it's done so lately. The Wahoos have won four of their previous five road games in the ACC and desperately need to avoid taking an ugly loss to the Eagles here. Despite their offensive struggles recently, we have faith in Tony Bennett to get it done. Lay the short number on Virginia here.
Navy (-2.5) vs. Lafayette
It's been a fun season for Lafayette, who miraculously started Patriot League season 7-0 after entering conference play with a 1-12 record. The Leopards were skating by at the time, winning five of the seven games by single digits, and it's turned on them quickly. They've gone 3-6 since that 7-0 start and now sit in second place, just a game ahead of Lehigh and American. They also possess a bottom 20 offense nationally per KenPom and will have to travel to Annapolis in a tricky spot here. The regression monster has come for Lafayette, and we expect it to continue against Navy here. Lay the points with the Midshipmen.
St. John's (+1.5) @ Butler
Rick Pitino may have unlocked something within his team over the weekend. Stepping out in the classic white suit may have been the best button he could have pushed, as it inspired the Johnnies to a massive win over Creighton on Sunday. Things don't get any easier with a trip to Butler on Wednesday night, where they are slight dogs on the road. The Red Storm undoubtedly have the talent to be better than they have been, and we're willing to bet that Pitino may have unlocked something here late in the season between his post-game press conference and fancy wear. Back St. John's on the road here.
South Carolina (+5.5) @ Texas A&M
Texas A&M is in a total tailspin at the moment, dropping their past four games, including some backbreakers to Vanderbilt and Arkansas. Although the predictive metrics still have a bit of faith in them, we believe this number has gotten out of control. There isn't much of a reason for the Aggies to be this heavy a favorite against a South Carolina team that has been really strong this season, even away from home. Scoop up the handful of points here and take the Gamecocks to cover.
Southern Miss (+3.5) @ South Alabama
Andre Curbelo is back and better than ever for Southern Miss. After dealing with concussion-like symptoms and missing ten games, the former Illinois and St. John's guard is back on the court for the Golden Eagles and has put up 24 points in two of their past three games, taking home KenPom MVP and a victory in each one. His return is crucial to the team's success, and we're willing to back them on the road here with a few points coming our way. Leverage his return and back Southern Miss on Wednesday night.
