5. Kansas City Chiefs
Preseason Record: 0-3
Preseason ATS Record: 0-3AFC West Odds: -270
Super Bowl Odds: +550Let's get one thing straight. The Kansas City Chiefs have nothing left to prove. The NFL's latest dynasty has run rampant for most of the last six years, but that doesn't absolve them from their disastrous preseason results.
KC couldn't get anything going on either side of the ball. The defending Super Bowl Champions gave up 84 points on defense without winning or covering the spread in any of their three outings. Arguably, their worst result was losing 24-23 to the Detroit Lions while playing all their starters and closing as -9.5 chalk.
Thankfully, there are no meaningful conclusions that we can draw from the 2024 preseason. The Chiefs remain the betting favorites to claim their third straight championship and fourth title in six years.
1. Cincinnati Bengals
Preseason Record: 0-3
Preseason ATS Record: 0-3AFC North Odds: +165
Super Bowl Odds: +1500Football bettors should avert their eyes if the preseason foreshadowed what to expect in the AFC North. Arguably, the Cincinnati Bengals were the worst of three winless teams, perpetuating some concerns brought to the forefront last season.
While Joe Burrow didn't play, and most of the starters were used sparingly, if at all, the Bengals had some glaring weaknesses on both sides of the ball. They allowed all three opponents to outgain them, giving up a jaw-dropping 360.3 yards per game.
It's excellent that Burrow looks great in practice, but he and some of the Bengals starters will be without game-speed practice ahead of Week 1's clash versus the New England Patriots. But if they couldn't get past the Indianapolis Colts B-squad in the preseason, they could have difficulty containing the Pats.
2. Pittsburgh Steelers
Preseason Record: 0-3
Preseason ATS Record: 0-3AFC North Odds: +750
Super Bowl Odds: +5000We have discussed for months how the Pittsburgh Steelers' acquisitions of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields made them a better team. But after three weeks of preseason action, we're left spinning a very different narrative.
Neither quarterback looked good in limited action. Fields was sacked twice in the preseason finale, amplifying concerns that have haunted him his entire career. Although Wilson led the team on a scoring drive against the Detroit Lions, we still haven't seen him stretch the field, casting doubt on his ability to help the Steelers reach their ceiling.
Bettors still have reservations about the Steelers, as they remain the longest team in the AFC North futures market and distant +5000 longshots in Super Bowl betting.
3. Atlanta Falcons
Preseason Record: 0-3
Preseason ATS Record: 1-2NFC South Odds: -145
Super Bowl Odds: +2600At a certain point, talking about how good the Atlanta Falcons could be will get a little exhausting. But after a lackluster preseason showing, there's no other way of putting it.
Again, the Falcons failed to soar to the heights everyone thought they were capable of. Atlanta went 0-3 straight up, albeit with an against-the-spread win in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens.
Predictably, the NFC South frontrunners left most of their starters off the field throughout the preseason, protecting their health for the start of the regular season. Still, that doesn't excuse getting shut out against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the final preseason tune-up.
There is no margin for error as they take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Kansas City Chiefs to open the year.
4. Cleveland Browns
Preseason Record: 0-3
Preseason ATS Record: 1-2AFC North Odds: +450
Super Bowl Odds: +3500The Cleveland Browns, the last of the AFC North trio, don't have an excuse for underachieving this preseason. Kevin Stefanski turned to three quarterbacks with meaningful NFL experience, and none of them could march the Browns to victory.
Granted, Week 3's tilt versus the Seattle Seahawks was a more inspired effort, but Cleveland still came up painfully short. They scored a meaningless touchdown with seconds to go, kicking a field goal to close the deficit to 37-33. While that may have benefited bettors who got a piece of the Browns on the closing line, anyone who bought them on the opening line of -1.5 up to +3.5 was left out in the cold.
We don't doubt that Stefanski will have his team ready for the season opener, but we are skeptical of how ready they will be.
