Tommy DeVito
The New York Giants' season was long over before Sunday, but how about Tommy DeVito? If you had told me on Saturday that DeVito would have thrown three touchdowns, I would’ve thought you were out of your mind. Man, did he look improved. Giants fans probably didn’t want them to win as they’re searching for the best draft position possible but with favorable games over the next weeks against the Patriots and Packers, maybe DeVito and the Giants will keep surprising people.
NFC Powers Chasing the Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles are 8-1 and atop the NFC, but head into a critical matchup tonight in Kansas City as the underdog, so the door could be cracked open tonight for one of the other NFC powers to steal the top spot. On Sunday, every team that could catch the Eagles did their job. The San Francisco 49ers appear back in their early season form as they dominated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in all phases, the Dallas Cowboys steamrolled the Carolina Panthers, and the Detroit Lions pulled off a gutsy comeback win over the Chicago Bears. There is still a ways to go in the regular season, but with only one available bye spot in the playoffs now, every win matters that much more. If the Eagles can’t get the job done tonight, things get a lot tighter.
Denver Broncos
Uh, will the Denver Broncos make the playoffs? After an embarrassing start to the season, the Broncos find themselves on a four-game winning streak and back in the playoff picture. Russell Wilson looks the best he has in years alongside an improving running attack, the defense is stepping up in critical spots as they were predicted to early in the year, and Sean Payton has finally inserted confidence in this team that they can beat anyone. The road doesn’t get much easier for the Broncos with looming games against Cleveland, Houston, and Detroit over their next four games, but the Broncos cannot be counted out now.
Buffalo Bills
It’s hard to buy into the Buffalo Bills long-term, given their ups and downs, but they stepped up when they needed to the most to keep the season alive. Yes, it was against Zach Wilson and the New York Jets, but with their next three games in Philadelphia, in Kansas City, and against Dallas, a loss yesterday would have been the nail in the coffin for the Bills' season. We’ll see if they step up and play to their potential over these next three weeks.
Cleveland Browns
Deshaun Watson’s season-ending injury was a gut punch for a team that already lost Nick Chubb and witnessed lackluster their other quarterback options, but Sunday reminded us that this team has a championship-level defense. They took down the then 6-3 Pittsburgh Steelers as Dorian Thompson-Robinson did what he needed to at the quarterback spot to get the job done. It won’t always be easy, but if Thompson-Robinson is able to stabilize, and the defense balls out weekly, the Browns will be a tough out in the playoffs.
