Fantasy Baseball Draft: Avoid Colorado Rockies’ Current Lineup

2025 MLB Season: Colorado Rockies – Coors Field Mismanagement and Limited Fantasy Value

The Rockies are once again entering a season with significant questions about their roster, leadership, and overall direction. After years of subpar performance, the franchise has failed to make the necessary adjustments to remain competitive in the NL West. The lineup, while housing a few solid players, is far from inspiring, and their pitching staff, historically marred by the challenges of Coors Field, remains a tough sell. Fantasy managers hoping for a resurgence of value from Rockies players will likely be disappointed once again in 2025.

Lineup Breakdown: Few Bright Spots, but Not Much Else

The Rockies’ lineup has some recognizable names, but it’s hard to get excited about most of them. Kris Bryant, who was once one of the most coveted players in the game, has become a cautionary tale for fantasy managers, plagued by injuries and declining production. You’d think playing in Coors Field would boost his numbers, but unfortunately, Bryant just doesn’t seem to have the consistency needed to warrant a roster spot in most fantasy leagues.

Then there’s Nolan Jones, whose 2024 season was a complete disaster. After showing promise earlier in his career, Jones struggled to find any rhythm last year, and unless he shows significant improvement, you’ll likely be better off looking elsewhere for fantasy value. Still, there is some upside here, and Jones could be a decent late-round flier in deeper leagues, but don’t hold your breath.

For those looking for more reliable fantasy assets, Ezequiel Tovar and Brendan Doyle are the key players. Tovar, the talented shortstop, enjoyed a breakout season in 2024 and should continue to be a top performer for the Rockies in 2025. His ability to hit for average and provide value in multiple categories makes him one of the few true draft-worthy players in Colorado’s lineup. Meanwhile, Doyle, an outfielder, flashed potential in his rookie season and could offer strong value at a reasonable cost. Beyond those two, however, fantasy managers should avoid most of the other names on the roster.

Betting Angle: Ezequiel Tovar Total Home Runs (Over/Under 17.5)

Given Tovar’s breakout potential, betting the Over on 17.5 home runs could offer value. He’s playing in Coors Field, a hitter-friendly park, and has the power to deliver solid fantasy numbers. If he builds on his 2024 season, Tovar should exceed 17 home runs easily.

Fantasy Relevance: A Few Bright Spots, but Not Much Else

If you are targeting a Rockies hitter in your draft, your options are very limited. Doyle and Tovar stand out, but the rest of the lineup is a collection of players that either underperformed last season (Bryant, Rodgers) or have too many question marks (Jones, Tyler Stratton, Michael Taglia, etc.).

While it’s true that Coors Field has historically boosted offensive numbers, it’s not the same hitter’s haven it once was. The Rockies’ management has failed to build around Coors to take full advantage of its hitter-friendly environment. If anything, Coors Field is starting to have the opposite effect for players’ long-term fantasy value, as it amplifies poor performance. So, the days of locking in Rockies hitters on your fantasy squad for guaranteed power numbers are over.

In fact, if you’re in a deep league and looking for offensive upside late in drafts, you might take a shot on Jordan Beck or Zach Veen, Colorado’s top prospects. These guys could break out, but it’s risky. It’s not likely these players will contribute much early on in 2025.

Betting Angle: Total Rockies Wins (Over/Under 69.5)

With their ongoing mismanagement and lack of a real offensive or pitching identity, betting the Under 69.5 wins seems like a good move. The Rockies are unlikely to contend in the NL West with the top teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants pushing them further down the standings.

Pitching Staff: Another Year of Coors Misery

The Rockies pitching staff is, once again, the least exciting part of their fantasy value. The challenge of pitching in Coors Field, with its high elevation and hitter-friendly conditions, makes it nearly impossible for pitchers to sustain solid numbers. This has been a consistent problem for the franchise for years, and 2025 figures to be no different.

German Márquez is the lone Rockies pitcher who might be worth a glance in deeper fantasy leagues, but even then, his fantasy value is limited to road starts only. Márquez has historically been much more effective away from Coors Field, but expecting him to provide significant fantasy value, even on the road, is a long shot. And when the Rockies play most of their games in Coors, the upside for any of their pitchers is capped.

Betting Angle: German Márquez’s Road ERA (Over/Under 3.75)

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider betting the Under on Márquez’s road ERA (3.75). He’s been much better on the road, and even though the Rockies’ rotation remains lackluster, Márquez could provide some value in non-Coors starts.

Closer Committee: No Clear Answer in Colorado’s Bullpen

The Rockies’ bullpen is another area filled with uncertainty. As with many other teams that are far from contention, the Rockies’ bullpen is likely to feature a rotating cast of closers throughout the year. Names like Pierce Johnson, Justin Lawrence, and Márquez have been mentioned as potential candidates, but none inspire much confidence.

In a situation like this, it’s hard to justify investing in any of these pitchers in fantasy leagues, as the lack of consistency and a clear closer role makes it difficult to predict who will secure the most saves. If you’re desperate for saves in a deep league, you might consider taking a late-round flier on one of these guys, but don’t expect reliable results.

Betting Angle: Total Rockies Saves (Over/Under 30.5)

Given the bullpen uncertainty, betting the Under on 30.5 saves for the Rockies seems like a safe play. With no established closer and a roster full of uncertainty, it’s tough to see any one reliever grabbing a significant number of saves this year.

Conclusion: A Lackluster Season in Store for Colorado

The Rockies are a team stuck in the middle, unable to rebuild or contend effectively. Fantasy value is hard to find outside of a few select players, and even then, the upside is limited. Tovar is the standout fantasy asset, followed by Doyle for those in need of a low-risk outfielder. However, beyond those two, it’s a tough roster to get excited about.

In terms of pitching, Márquez could provide some value in road starts, but beyond that, the rest of the rotation and bullpen is largely avoidable. With Coors Field still playing a significant factor, the potential for success for Rockies pitchers is slim to none.

The Rockies are in a rebuilding phase with few bright spots, and unfortunately for fantasy managers, it doesn’t look like 2025 will be a year of significant change. They’re likely to finish near the bottom of the NL West again, with not much to get excited about for fantasy owners. Stay away from most Rockies players and target a few of their top prospects, but don’t expect much fantasy gold from Colorado this year.
