In a bold stroke this week, the Los Angeles Lakers unveiled JJ Redick, ex-NBA sharpshooter and former ESPN analyst, as the new head coach, marking him as the 29th to helm the storied franchise.
Speaking at a press event alongside GM Rob Pelinka at the Lakers’ practice facility, Redick couldn’t help but quip about his unexpected rise to this prestigious role, surrounded by Lakers staff, reporters, and some of his future players. “I have never coached in the NBA before," he announced with a blend of humor and candor. “It starts with a commitment to serve—the players, the Lakers organization, and our fans. It’s also about embracing competition and excellence, fostering collaboration, and leading by example. These are the pillars that fuel my drive," he added.
Last Thursday, Redick reportedly inked a four-year contract with the Lakers. Despite retiring in 2021 after a 15-year career across six NBA teams, and then moving on to a lead analyst role for ESPN—culminating in his coverage of the 2024 NBA Finals on ABC—his formal coaching dossier lists only youth team volunteer work. Yet, Redick is betting on his vast hoops knowledge, magnetic personality, a robust coaching staff, and a flair for innovation to bridge this significant experience gap.
Redick shared his awe at the unfolding of these events, emphasizing the gravity of his new role. “This process has been surreal. Taking this on is something I do with utmost seriousness. The Lakers command a fan base brimming with passion worldwide, and they expect nothing short of a championship. Delivering that caliber of a team is precisely what I’m here to do," he affirmed.
Interestingly, Redick, along with Lakers superstar LeBron James, co-hosts the podcast “Mind the Game," popular for its deep dives into basketball tactics and player motivation. However, Redick noted that his podcast days are on pause as he takes on his coaching duties. “For now—and I hope it’s a long while—I’m stepping back from the content world. There will be no podcasts. We’ll pick it up when I catch a break from the intense schedule ahead," he stated.
Redick steps in following the departure of Darvin Ham, who left the team earlier in May after a two-season tenure that included two playoff appearances, a trip to the 2023 Western Conference Finals, and an In-Season Tournament victory. The Lakers, having wrapped up a disappointing 47-35 season with an early playoff exit courtesy of the Denver Nuggets, are looking to Redick to revitalize the team, especially as he leads a roster that features LeBron, just six months his junior.
